In the midst of hurricane season, Sonny’s is teaming up with Operation BBQ Relief to shine a spotlight on their disaster relief efforts and emphasize the importance of supporting communities in need. Operation BBQ Relief is a nonprofit organization that brings hope, nourishment, and comfort to families affected by natural disasters. By combining our resources, expertise, and unwavering passion, we are determined to help Operation BBQ Relief create a genuine and lasting impact in the lives of those facing the aftermath of hurricanes and other catastrophic events.
Behind Their Beginnings
Founded in 2011 by competition pitmasters, Stan Hays and Will Cleaver, Operation BBQ Relief emerged as a response to the devastating tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri. Fueled by their love for BBQ and their heartfelt desire to provide comfort and hope to the people of Joplin, they embarked on a journey that would change countless lives. With a mission to connect, inspire, serve, and educate, Operation BBQ Relief has provided over 10 million meals across the United States and internationally. The organization not only provides nourishment but also stands as a beacon of hope and healing in times of crisis.
When storms ravage communities, they spring into action by deploying their Disaster Response Team made up of thousands of volunteers, experienced pitmasters, and mobile pits. They serve hot BBQ meals to survivors, first responders, and relief workers, providing a moment of comfort and a reminder of normalcy during challenging times.
More Than Disaster Relief
In addition to its core mission of providing hot meals during crises, Operation BBQ Relief offers a range of impactful programs that extend their support, compassion, and expertise. The Always Serving Project, one of their initiatives, focuses on providing meals and support to first responders, veterans, and members of the military. Through this project, Operation BBQ Relief not only teaches culinary skills but also fosters the spirit of giving, inspiring participants to use their newfound abilities to serve those in need within their own communities.
Promoting Healing
Operations BBQ Relief’s newest initiative launching this year in July, Camp OBR is a 190-acre retreat built to serve military members, veterans, first responders, and their families. The camp aims to promote healing by fostering team building, fellowship, personal growth and resiliency.
