1968

Founded by Original Pitmaster Sonny Tillman

On May 16, 1968, Sonny Tillman opened the doors to the very first Sonny’s on Waldo Road in Gainesville, Florida. It was a local, friendly BBQ joint with a simple mission: spread the spirit of BBQ.

1971

First Franchised Sonny’s

Sonny kept on cookin’ up BBQ until 1971 when the first franchised Sonny’s opened up to serve slow-smoked favorites from pit to plate. 

2013

A Smokin’ New Look 

While the past holds a place in our hearts, in 2013, we updated our look. With smokers up-front and our signature oak wood in the lobby, we put our Pitmasters front and center. 

2024

Still your local BBQ joint 

Today, we may be in a few more places, but our seasoned Pitmasters are locals just like Sonny, and they know that nothin’ beats delicious BBQ slathered in Southern hospitality.
